Hello
Have you ever had a project in the back of your mind that just sat there bubbling, but never reached a boil? Well, I’ve just gone through that experience in creating my new workshop and happily, you reap the benefits. It’s so exciting to see your idea morph into reality!
“If Not Now…When?” will help you take that unfulfilled dream and put it into a concrete form. You’ll leave my new workshop with specific doable action steps in alignment with your goal, and the unique format will build in accountability and group support.
The inside scoop on this class is that it is designed as a weekend retreat. If you have any inclination to take it – or to recommend it to a friend – do it now. Get in on the ground floor!
Longmont Free University has arranged for me to present it on three consecutive Saturday mornings and they are only charging $85 (plus a $10 material fee) for the entire offering. When I present it as a weekend retreat, the cost will be much higher to recoup my costs. This is the lowest price it will ever be.
Visit my website for more specific info or Longmont Free University to register. Of course, you can email me for more information by hitting ‘reply’ to this newsletter. See you there! And bring your friends!
Blessings,
Debra

The Other Side
Here at the University of Colorado where I have my ‘day job,’ I’m in the process of hiring two staff members. After all those years of teaching job seekers how to find work, it’s so interesting to be on the other side of the table when it comes to a job search. Here are a few things that have made the difference when I decided to hire someone.
Be on time. How simple can it be? The candidate I am seriously considering was 15 minutes early. Coincidence? I think not. Someone that demonstrates by their actions that they are dependable is going to be taken seriously. It’s just that simple.
Don’t presume. I had an applicant approach me by email and she started her message by saying: “At this time I am applying to the Department of Physics as an eligible Reinstatement to the University. I am available to begin work immediately, please see my resume and references which are attached.” There is nothing in that message that indicates to me that she would ever put anyone ahead of herself. I’m not calling her in.
Don’t try to sell yourself on a job that you’re overqualified for. Yes, I know how tempting it is to say, “I’m fine with answering the phones and distributing the mail” when you know you’ll be bored to tears in two weeks. Instead of reassuring the hiring manager of how much abuse you’re willing to take, you should be asking how the job can be enriched. What learning opportunities are available? That person across the desk can see your level of expertise. An overqualified person that feels they have no future is going to be very unhappy, thus making their co-workers unhappy. No one wants that. Come in with a learning attitude, and everyone wins.
Play the 5:01 game and dress appropriately. Show up at the workplace at 5:01 the night before your interview and see how everyone dresses. Dress up one level from that. I had a gentleman in a business suit show up for a receptionist position. The current receptionist was in shorts and flip-flops and that attire was completely appropriate.
I realize these things seem obvious, and any one of these could be overlooked; however, when taken as a whole, you may be presenting a façade you don’t mean to.
